Sunday Evening Book Study

Right now, on Sunday Evenings (5pm), the men are working through Brant Hansen's book "The Men We Need." The woman are working through Elizabeth George's book "A Woman After God's Own Heart."

Below you will find discussion questions for each week so that you can be prepared for discussion on Sunday evenings.

"The Men We Need"

Below are the discussion questions for the men's book, "The Men We Need."

July 13th
(pp. 17-37)

Discussion One

  • On page 17, Hansen says the following: "I'm here to answer a simple (but not simplistic) question: What are men supposed to actually do? / This book is about a big vision for manhood. We've lacked that vision, and all of us - men, women, and children - are hurting because of it."

  • Do you think Hanson is right that we lack a good vision for manhood? If so, why do we lack a good vision?

  • What vision of manhood, if any, is currently out there?

  • Are people hurt because of the current vision of manhood? Who? Why?

Discussion Two

  • On page 25, Hansen says the following: “but the bigger picture is that women sense who we are supposed to be, and they are attracted to us when they see us living that out.”

  • Do you â€‹think this is true - that women sense the right vision of manhood and seek it out?

  • How much does your marriage depend on 'attractiveness'? What would you say matters to your wife more than how you look?

Discussion Three

  • On page 29, Hansen says the following: “I believe looking after our own ‘gardens’ rains our masculine purpose, and we all implicitly know it." He goes on to say that “Masculinity is about taking responsibility."

  • Do you think he is right? What evidence does he provide from Scripture? Is his use of Scripture valid?

Discussion Four

  • Hansen puts a lot of blame on Adam, do you think that is justified? What should Adam have done?

  • What do you make of Hansen's example of Jake? Is it accurate? He says on page 35 that "real humans...suffer" because of Jake (and those like him). Who suffers? Why?

  • What does it look like for men to be active and take responsibility?

    • How do we instill the right attitudes and ambitions in younger generations?

"Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory."
